is a quiet and beautiful place exuding an air of peace and harmony.
Residents of Nandigram work with dedication for the general upliftment
of the needy people around, as a part of their social responsibility,
and also pursue spiritual practices for inner growth. Nandigram
evokes a sense of social and spiritual fulfillment.
The inception of Nandigram began in 1985 with a group of few friends
who ecided to leave a chaotic and unhealthy urban life behind to
bring about a meaningful healthy life that was founded in a simple
living: the life that was guided by social responsibilities and
graced by inward spiritual experiences.
land, 25 acres in area was obtained from Government at a concessional
rate. It was definitely not an inviting place, and was absolutely
barren, with big crevices and thorny bushes. In addition, there
was hostility of distrustful local people who eyed the newcomers
with suspicion and resentment. After braving onslaught of all the
early difficulties, a community in the name of Nandigram was formed.
The organization is named Nandigram Trust, a public charitable trust
registered under Bombay Public Trust Act, 1950.
name Nandigram was inspired by Hindu Epic 'Ramayana' as per which
Lord Ram was exiled in forest and his brother Bharat was bestowed
upon the responsibility to rule the kingdom of Ayodhya. Bharat instead
chose to reside in an adjacent village known as Nandigram and placed
the footwear of Shri Ram on the royal throne and ruled on Shri Ram's
behalf, awaiting his ruturn. The founding of present Nandigram draws
a parallel. The founders of Nandigram left the magacity of Mumbai
and settled in a small village. Without any egotism of doership,
the inmates of Nandigram are expected to pursue their duties in
the form of social service. Further, like Bharat, they would await
the arrival of Shri Ram in due course. That is, they strive for
purification of their inner equipment and strive for sadhana with
full faith in ultimate enlightenment to come in due course.
With the passage of time, the soil which
was once totally barren, turned into a green oasis. Nandigram has
now emerged as a peaceful and enchanting place, with fragrant shrubs,
big trees with lovely foliage and musical sounds of the birds all
around. It is a place to relax, to be silent, to meditate, to be
with oneself in the midst of nature. The place now comprises of
adequate facility for water and electricity, living quarters, buildings
for various activities, a few guest houses, common kitchen and serene
places/spots for spiritual practices. Local people are now very
friendly, cooperative and supportive.
